Jallikattu, a traditional sport of Tamil Nadu, is celebrated every year in the month of January on the third day of the Pongal festival, known as Maattu Pongal. It is a significant cultural event and has been a part of Tamil heritage for over 2000 years.
History of Jallikattu:
Jallikattu is known by several names such as Manju Virattu, Sallikattu, and Eru Thazhuvuthal. In ancient times, this sport was considered a symbol of masculinity and achievement. “Eru Thazhuvuthal” (embracing the bull) was seen as a way for a man to prove his valor, often winning him pride and the right to marry a woman.
Rules of the Sport:
Manju Virattu is conducted annually in various parts of Tamil Nadu, particularly in places like Madurai, Sivagangai, and Pudukkottai. In this sport, bulls are released through a narrow entrance called Vaadi Vaasal, and the participants try to embrace and hold onto the bull.
The sport requires great courage and intelligence from the participants, as they attempt to hold onto the hump of the bull and stay mounted. Victorious participants are often rewarded with prizes or money.
Protection of Bulls:
Jallikattu also plays a vital role in preserving native cattle breeds and maintaining traditional livestock. Breeds such as Kangayam, Pulikulam, Umbalachery, Bargur, and Malai Maadu are particularly popular in this sport and are protected through such events.
Madurai and Jallikattu:
In Madurai and its surrounding regions, this sport is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Here, Jallikattu is considered more than just a sport—it is a grand festival. Preparations for the event begin several months in advance. The bulls undergo medical check-ups and are registered at designated arenas.
This festival takes place in several famous villages like Avaniyapuram, Alanganallur, and Palamedu, involving around 700 native bulls and 300 bull tamers. The event attracts both local and international spectators and is broadcast live on Indian television channels.
International Stage:
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has announced plans to establish an international sports arena for traditional sports like Jallikattu. This will help promote Tamil heritage and traditional games on a global scale.
