Madurai Airport’s new Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower, built at a cost of ₹88 crore with modern facilities, is set to become operational by the end of January, according to the Airport Director.
Located near Avaniyapuram, Madurai Airport serves as a vital transport hub for people in southern Tamil Nadu. Thousands of passengers travel through this airport every day. Declared an International Airport last October, it now operates 24 hours a day.
Currently, flights operate to both domestic and international destinations including Dubai, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai. With passenger numbers steadily increasing, Madurai Airport has recently been upgraded from Category-3 to Category-2.
In line with this growth, expansion projects are being actively undertaken, including runway extension and other infrastructure improvements. One of the key developments is the new Air Traffic Control Tower, construction of which began in 2021.
Built with advanced technology at a cost of ₹88 crore, the tower is now fully completed and has successfully passed its trial run.
The new ATC Tower is expected to further improve the airport’s operational efficiency and enhance the overall experience for passengers.
