The Phase One construction of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) campus at Ko. Pudupatti near Thoppur in Madurai district has reached nearly 90% completion, raising expectations that the medical college campus could be inaugurated by the end of August. The ₹2,021.51 crore project, spread across 220 acres and funded with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is progressing rapidly as officials intensify efforts to complete the remaining works within the scheduled timeline. The development is expected to significantly strengthen advanced healthcare and medical education facilities in southern Tamil Nadu.
Although the foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 27, 2019, major construction activities commenced on May 22, 2024. The entire project has been scheduled for completion within 33 months, with the full campus expected to become operational by February 2027.
The first phase includes 13 buildings comprising the medical college, nursing college, administrative block, outpatient department and other essential academic and healthcare facilities. The second phase will add 16 more structures, including an auditorium, residential quarters, the director’s residence and an AYUSH medical block, creating a comprehensive institutional campus with 24 to 29 buildings.
The upcoming hospital will provide 900 inpatient beds, including a dedicated 150-bed infectious disease unit. Construction of the medical college, hostels, laboratories, outpatient facilities, residential quarters, sports ground and a 750-seat convention hall has entered the final stage, with thousands of workers engaged around the clock to complete the project.
