In a major milestone for Southern Tamil Nadu, the Madurai Railway Division has now achieved 100% electrification of all its railway routes. With the recent completion of electrification works on the RamanathapuramโRameswaram section, the division becomes fully equipped for electric train operations across its network.
โก Final Section Electrified: RamanathapuramโRameswaram
Until recently, all routes in the Madurai Division were electrified except the RamanathapuramโRameswaram line. Now, with electrification work successfully completed on this stretch, electric trains can soon operate all the way to Rameswaram.
To inspect this newly electrified section, Chief Electrical Engineer Mr. Ganesh will conduct a detailed review on Saturday, September 13.
- Inspection Schedule:
- Start: 10:15 AM from Ramanathapuram
- End: 1:45 PM at Rameswaram
After the inspection, a speed trial using an electric engine-powered special train will be conducted between Rameswaram and Ramanathapuram.
โ ๏ธ 25,000 Volts Live โ Public Alert Issued
For the trial run, 25,000 volts of electricity will be live on the overhead wires.
As a safety precaution, the Railway Administration has issued a public warning:
โDo not approach the railway tracks or overhead lines during this period.โ
This is to ensure the safety of people living near the railway lines.

During the 69th Railway Week Celebrations held in June, several achievements of the Madurai Division were highlighted:
- โน1,245 crore revenue โ the highest ever
- Improved train punctuality with minimal delays
- Increase in both passenger numbers and revenue
- Enhanced facilities for loco pilots, including upgraded restrooms and resting quarters
The successful electrification is another proud addition to these accomplishments.
๐ Infrastructure Safety Checks Conducted
As part of the final review, the Chief Electrical Engineer is inspecting infrastructure to ensure compliance with safety standards:
- Railway stations
- Footbridges and road overbridges
- Tunnels and curves
- Level crossings
- Power distribution lines crossing the tracks
Only after confirming everything is up to standard will electric engines be cleared to run on this newly electrified route.
