Five Sabhas Represented in Madurai During Thiruvathirai
As part of the Thiruvathirai festival celebrations, the concept of the Pancha Sabhas—the five sacred halls associated with Lord Nataraja—was prominently represented in Madurai, drawing thousands of devotees from across southern Tamil Nadu.
Velli Sabha (Madurai)
The renowned Velli Ambalam shrine within the Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple features Lord Nataraja in a unique posture. Unlike other temples where the deity raises the left leg, Nataraja here is seen lifting the right leg. This form, known as “Kaal Maari Aadiya”, symbolizes compassion and divine grace and is considered exclusive to Madurai.
Ponn Sabha (Chidambaram)
The Ponn Sabha, associated with Chidambaram Nataraja Temple, represents the golden hall where Lord Shiva is believed to eternally perform the Ananda Tandava as Thillai Nataraja.
Rathina Sabha (Thiruvalangadu)
The Rathina Sabha commemorates Shiva’s Urdhva Tandava, performed during a divine dance contest with Goddess Kali. This form is traditionally linked to Thiruvalangadu Temple.
Tamira Sabha (Tirunelveli)
The Tamira Sabha symbolizes the copper hall of Shiva’s cosmic dance and represents the tradition associated with the Nellaiappar Temple.
Chitra Sabha (Courtallam)
The Chitra Sabha, connected with Courtallam, is depicted in artistic and pictorial form, highlighting Shiva’s cosmic dance as divine visual expression.

Thiruvathirai Festival Observances
In the early hours of Thiruvathirai, Maha Abhishekam was performed for Velli Ambalam Nataraja using milk, curd, tender coconut water, and other sacred substances.
On Thiruvathirai day, the five Nataraja forms symbolizing the Pancha Sabhas were elaborately decorated and taken in a grand procession around the four Aadiveedhis (temple streets) of Madurai.
Believing that worshipping all five Sabhas in a single location grants immense spiritual merit, thousands of devotees from various districts of southern Tamil Nadu gathered in Madurai to participate in the celebrations.

Thiruvathirai Kali Prasadam
As part of the festival rituals, devotees were offered Thiruvathirai Kali, a traditional sweet considered dear to Lord Nataraja, along with Kootu prepared using seven varieties of vegetables.
Devotees widely believe that consuming even a small portion of Thiruvathirai Kali on this auspicious day brings spiritual merit and well-being.

Special Darshan on Thiruvathirai
On the occasion of Thiruvathirai, devotees at the Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple were granted a rare darshan of Velli Ambalam Nataraja in the Kaal Maari Aadiya posture, along with representations of the other four Sabhas. Temple authorities noted that such a combined darshan is rarely available elsewhere.
