The Thaimaman Gold Ring Scheme was announced to provide a one-gram gold ring to eligible children born in government hospitals across Tamil Nadu. The scheme covers eligible children born from June 22, 2026, and the government has procured 1.28 lakh rings for the first phase. Each ring is being provided with a unique serial number and tamper-proof packaging.
Chief Minister Vijay is scheduled to formally launch the scheme at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai today. At the launch event, he is expected to present one-gram, 22-carat gold rings to around 25 newborns. He is also scheduled to visit the hospital’s maternity ward and meet infants and their mothers.
The state has made arrangements at 107 hub centres for the initial distribution of rings to children born in government hospitals from June 22 until the scheme’s launch. During the initial distribution period, 100 children per day at each hub are to be covered. From the formal launch onward, eligible newborns are to receive their rings before leaving the government hospital.
The scheme was initially scheduled to be launched on September 15 but was postponed to September 28. The government has also stated that implementation on the launch date will exclude Chengalpattu and Tiruppur districts because of the Model Code of Conduct linked to by-elections in the Madhurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies.
Vijay’s arrival in Madurai has been accompanied by extensive security arrangements. Police personnel have been deployed at the airport and along important routes leading towards Rajaji Government Hospital, while additional crowd and traffic-management measures have been put in place around the programme venue.
Reports also indicate that the Chief Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the renovated Gandhi Memorial Museum after the hospital programme and may subsequently visit the Meenakshi Amman Temple for darshan. The proposed temple visit has prompted additional security planning, although the final itinerary for that portion of the visit remains subject to official confirmation.
The Chief Minister’s Madurai programme is therefore centred on the launch of the Thaimaman Gold Ring Scheme, with officials simultaneously implementing security, traffic and crowd-management arrangements across the city.
