Collector Reviews Chithirai Festival Preparations

Ahead of the globally renowned Chithirai Festival of Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple and the historic Kallazhagar entry into the Vaigai River, a high-level preparatory review meeting for the 2026 celebrations was held on Friday at the District Collectorate. The meeting, chaired by District Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar in the presence of City Police Commissioner J. Loganathan, focused on coordinated arrangements for security, sanitation, transport, power supply, medical response and crowd management, as lakhs of devotees are expected to gather for the annual festival.

Preparedness and Key Arrangements
Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, Masi streets, procession routes, Vaigai riverbanks, Kallazhagar Ethirsevai points, Natham, Melur, Vadipatti, Madurai city
Enhanced security, crowd regulation, devotee movement management, emergency response, public announcements, medical monitoring
Additional CCTV deployment, stronger police surveillance, PA systems on standby, round-the-clock fire and rescue preparedness
Temporary toilets, uninterrupted drinking water, sanitation drives, ambulance support, medical camps, food safety enforcement

The Collector directed officials to intensify security measures in all major congregation points, including the temple complex and streets through which the deities’ processions will pass. Additional surveillance cameras are to be installed in sensitive and crowded areas, while police personnel have been instructed to regulate crowd flow and ensure uninterrupted public movement. Public address systems will be kept fully operational to relay real-time information, alerts and instructions to devotees. Fire and rescue teams, along with emergency vehicles, have been ordered to remain on 24-hour standby throughout the festival period.

Municipal and local body officials were instructed to ensure uninterrupted supply of drinking water, provision of temporary sanitation facilities and continuous cleanliness drives across all festival zones. Medical teams and ambulance services will be stationed at critical points, while government and private hospitals have been asked to coordinate emergency healthcare support and maintain adequate stocks of essential medicines. Authorities also made it mandatory for organisers of annadhanam services to obtain prior approval from the Food Safety Department.

To reduce traffic congestion during the festival, officials are planning additional special bus services from Natham, Melur, Vadipatti and key urban zones in Madurai. Separate traffic routes are expected to be designated for buses and public movement. The electricity department has been directed to rectify low-hanging power lines along the Masi streets and issue prior public notices regarding any temporary power shutdowns during the chariot procession. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department has also been asked to ensure arrangements for pandals, lighting and insurance coverage.

The major festival events are scheduled to begin with Meenakshi Amman Pattabhishekam on April 26, followed by flag hoisting on April 27, Thirukalyanam on April 28, the grand chariot procession on April 29, Kallazhagar Ethirsevai on April 30 and the iconic Vaigai River entry in the early hours of May 1.

District officials said all departments have been instructed to work in complete coordination to ensure a safe, orderly and seamless festival experience for devotees.
