Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced six major development projects for Madurai district, focusing on traffic reduction, water resource improvement, flood protection, lake restoration, and major road upgrades.
1. New Road to Reduce Traffic โ โน130 Crore
A new 8.4 km road will be constructed along the northern bank of the Vaigai River from Viraganoor Ring Road to Chakkudi at a cost of โน130 crore to ease traffic congestion in Madurai city.
2. Replacement of Old Underground Drainage System
Several key areas โ including the Four Masi Streets near Meenakshi Amman Temple, Anna Nagar, Pudur, SS Colony, South Gate, Arapalayam, and more โ will see old drainage pipelines removed and new systems installed.
3. Flood Protection Wall โ โน7 Crore
A permanent flood protection wall will be built at Uthangudi surplus water canal in East Madurai at a cost of โน7 crore.
4. Lake Restoration & New Check Dam โ โน12.10 Crore
In Melur, the Kesampatti and Periya Aruvi reservoirs and associated tanks will be restored at a cost of โน2.60 crore. A new check dam will be constructed across the Pala River near Soorappatti at a cost of โน9.50 crore.
5. Lake & Canal Improvement โ โน10 Crore
Lakes and canals in Kodimangalam, Melamathur, Pudukulam, and Vilacheri will be modernized under a โน10 crore development plan.
6. Major Road Upgrades โ โน150 Crore
Key roads including
- Sathaiyar AnicutโVaigasipatti,
- MuduvarpattiโSalvarpatti,
- PalameduโVembaralai
will be upgraded at a total cost of โน150 crore.
