Political circles are abuzz as dramatic developments unfold in the Madurai Corporation due to internal party conflicts. Following the expulsion of Mayor Indrani Pon Vasanth’s husband, Pon Vasanth, from the DMK, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has issued a strict directive that all zonal heads of the Madurai Corporation must resign immediately.
🔹 Background:
The Mayor post in Madurai Corporation was reserved for women. Indrani Pon Vasanth, a DMK councillor from Ward 57 and a supporter of Finance Minister P. Thiaga Rajan, was elected as Mayor. Although she held the official post, many complaints surfaced that her husband, Pon Vasanth, was acting as a “shadow mayor.”
Allegations included his undue interference in government contracts, shop licenses, and other key decisions—essentially running the corporation’s administration himself. These complaints reached the DMK high command, and even party members protested against him, causing a major stir within the party.
🔹 DMK Action:
On May 29, DMK General Secretary Durai Murugan issued a statement:
“Pon Vasanth, councillor of Ward 57, has been temporarily removed from all responsibilities, including basic party membership, for violating party discipline and acting in ways that tarnished the party’s image.”
🔹 Chief Minister’s Drastic Move:
Following this, during the “Udanpirappe Vaa” one-on-one meetings with DMK administrators, CM Stalin reportedly warned:
“If necessary, I will strip posts without hesitation or mercy.”
He then ordered all zonal heads of the Madurai Corporation to resign from their positions.
🔹 Resignations:
In response, four DMK zonal heads — Pandiselvi, Saravana Bhuvaneswari, Suvitha, and Mukesh Sharma —
and two committee leaders resigned after an internal inquiry.
