Flag Hoisting Marks the Beginning of Aadi Festival at Kallazhagar Temple

The Aadi Peruvizha flag hoisting took place on Friday at the famous Kallazhagar Temple near Madurai.

Kallazhagar Temple is one of the sacred Vaishnavite shrines glorified by the Alwars and revered as equivalent to Tirumala Hills. It has been sung in the hymns (Pasurams) of six Alwars, including Goddess Andal. The Aadi Peruvizha is celebrated as one of the temple’s major annual festivals.

As the commencement of this year’s festival, the flag hoisting was held on Friday at 9:30 AM. Prior to this, special pujas and abhishekams were performed for Lord Kallazhagar, followed by rituals at the temple flagstaff. Then, Utsavar Sri Sundararaja Perumal, along with Sridevi and Bhoodevi, graced the occasion. Amid Vedic chants and the sound of mangala instruments, the ceremonial flag hoisting was performed as per tradition.

After the ritual, devotees adorned the flagstaff with garlands and offered prayers.

During the Aadi Peruvizha, Sri Sundararaja Perumal will bless devotees every morning in the golden palanquin, and in the evening on different divine vahanams (vehicles).
The highlight of the festival, the grand chariot procession (Therottam), will be held on August 9, 2025.
