Goripalayam Flyover to Be Ready in 15 Days

The construction of the Goripalayam flyover in Madurai city, undertaken to ease chronic traffic congestion, will be completed within the next 15 days, Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Public Accounts and Estimates Committee Chairman S. Gandhirajan said on Thursday, following an inspection of multiple development projects across Madurai district by a team of legislators.

Key Locations Inspected:
Goripalayam flyover construction site, Mastanpatti sewage pumping station, integrated kitchen at the Government Social Justice School hostel in Othakadai, Veeravasantharayar Mandapam at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, and the oil extraction unit being set up at Alagappan Nagar.

Ongoing Works and Financial Outlay:
Construction of the Goripalayam flyover at a cost of Rs 193 crore by the Highways Department, establishment of a sewage management facility at Mastanpatti, and setting up of a chekku oil production unit at a cost of Rs 23 lakh to enhance the output of the Pandiyan Consumers’ Cooperative Wholesale Store.

Current Status of Projects:
The Goripalayam flyover has achieved 72 per cent physical progress, remaining structural and finishing works are in the final phase, traffic management measures are being planned, and safety inspections will follow completion.

Administrative and Social Aspects:
Inspection of food preparation and hygiene standards at the students’ hostel, review of heritage conservation works at temple mandapams, assessment of public utility services, and interaction with officials on civic requirements.

Financial Planning and Future Measures:
Public demands and departmental requirements identified during inspections will be consolidated into a committee report, recommendations will be placed before the government, and proposals will be considered for inclusion in the 2026–27 State Budget, focusing on traffic decongestion and urban infrastructure strengthening.

Addressing reporters, Committee Chairman S. Gandhirajan said the flyover, aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Madurai city, would be opened after completion, and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin would inaugurate the project, marking a significant milestone in the city’s infrastructure development.
