Authorities in Madurai district have issued a public warning urging residents to avoid stepping outdoors between 12 noon and 3:30 p.m. as intense summer heat continues to grip the region. District Collector Praveen Kumar cautioned that rising temperatures could lead to dehydration and heat-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women and the elderly. With summer heat intensifying across several districts of Tamil Nadu, the administration has appealed to the public to strictly follow government-issued safety guidelines to reduce health risks caused by extreme temperatures.
Affected Areas and Vulnerable Groups
Madurai city, rural and urban areas across Madurai district, outdoor laborers, agricultural workers, construction workers, schoolchildren, infants and young children, pregnant women, elderly citizens, and individuals exposed to prolonged sunlight during daytime work.
Health Risks and Symptoms of Heat Exposure
Excessive sweating leading to dehydration, loss of body salts, extreme thirst, headaches, fatigue, dizziness, muscle cramps, reduced urine output, fainting and convulsions. Health officials warn that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can significantly increase the risk of heatstroke and other serious medical conditions if preventive measures are not taken.
Recommended Safety Measures for the Public
Residents are advised to drink adequate quantities of water even when not feeling thirsty, carry drinking water while travelling, and consume fluids such as buttermilk, tender coconut water, lemon juice with salt, ORS solutions and fresh fruit juices. Authorities also recommend consuming seasonal fruits and vegetables, staying indoors whenever possible, remaining in well-ventilated or cool environments, wearing light and loose cotton clothing, and using umbrellas or head coverings while stepping outdoors.
Activities to Avoid and Emergency Guidance
The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during peak heat hours between noon and 3:30 p.m., discourage children from playing outdoors during midday, avoid walking barefoot on hot surfaces, and refrain from consuming artificial soft drinks, alcohol and tobacco. In case of heat-related symptoms, people are urged to obtain ORS packets from Anganwadi centers, sub-health centers or government primary health centers, mix them in boiled and cooled drinking water, and seek medical consultation at nearby government hospitals or health facilities.
