The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has ordered that all 4,056 Aadhaar enrolment centres currently operating in Tamil Nadu must have the facility to make corrections or updates in Aadhaar details โ including name, date of birth, and address.
Background of the Case
A 74-year-old woman named Pushpam from Paramakudi had filed a petition stating:
โMy husband served in the Indian Army for 21 years and later retired. After his demise, I applied for a family pension. However, my application was rejected due to errors in my Aadhaar cardโs name and date of birth. Despite visiting several centres, the issue was not resolved.โ
Court Proceedings
Hearing the petition, Justice G.R. Swaminathan observed that the petitioner had submitted valid proof for the correction and that Aadhaar authorities should make the necessary updates accordingly.
The government counsel informed the court that name, date of birth, and biometric changes can be done only at the Madurai Aadhaar Seva Kendra, while address and phone number corrections can be made locally.
In response, the judge remarked:
โIt is not necessary to make an elderly woman from Paramakudi travel all the way to Madurai. Physical presence may be required for biometric updates, but other data corrections should be possible at the local level.โ
Aadhaar Authorityโs Statement
The government counsel appearing for the Aadhaar authority stated that 28 new Aadhaar service centres will be opened across Tamil Nadu by March 2026.
Courtโs Final Direction
Justice Swaminathan said:
โEvery district should have at least one Aadhaar service centre. Since it will take six more months for the new centres to open, the petitioner cannot be asked to wait. Therefore, the Aadhaar officials at Madurai must immediately process the petitionerโs correction request and ensure her family pension documents are updated accordingly.โ
The case was then disposed of.
