After a gap of 17 years, the historic Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai is preparing for a grand Kumbabishekam ceremony, with extensive renovation works progressing at a rapid pace. The last consecration ceremony at the temple was held in 2009. According to traditional practice, the ritual is usually conducted once every 12 years. However, the scheduled ceremony was delayed due to a fire accident that occurred in a temple mandapam in 2018. With restoration works now nearing completion, officials from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department have announced that the Kumbabishekam is planned to be held on September 17 this year.
