Madurai Hosts Elite Chess Seminar

At a three-day chess training seminar inaugurated on Thursday at Velammal Global School in Madurai, World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand stated that India has immense potential to produce a larger number of international chess champions. The seminar aims to introduce young players to advanced strategic concepts and competitive insights, equipping them with the analytical skills required to excel at the global level.

Seminar Objectives and Participation:
Velammal Global School, Madurai, participants from various districts of Tamil Nadu, over 400 students, professors, teachers, Velammal Education Group.
Analysis of international champions’ moves, strategic planning techniques, counter-strategy evaluation, understanding winning patterns.
Skill enhancement for youth, expansion of state-level tournaments, increase in structured coaching camps, sports quota opportunities in higher education.
Release of the book ‘Lighting Kit’, integration of academics and sports, institutional support for chess, national-level growth prospects.

Highlighting the structure of the seminar, Anand explained that young players would be taught why international champions opted for specific moves, the strategic thinking behind those decisions, and how opponents responded to them. Understanding the approach and mindset of champions, he noted, is essential for shaping the competitive future of aspiring players.

Pointing out that India has the world’s largest population, Anand said the country — including Tamil Nadu and other states — possesses tremendous scope to produce more international champions. However, he emphasized that this requires expanding chess tournaments and structured training programs nationwide. He further observed that the introduction of sports quota provisions in premier institutions such as IITs and medical colleges would significantly motivate young athletes to pursue excellence in sports alongside academics.

The seminar was presided over by Velammal Education Group Chairman Muthuramalingam. During the event, Anand’s book titled ‘Lighting Kit’ was released. Velammal Medical College Vice-Chairman Vivekanandan, along with faculty members and students, attended the program.

Anand urged the younger generation to pursue chess with dedication and strategic discipline to achieve global success.
