Preliminary rituals for the grand Kumbabishekam festival at the world-famous Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple are scheduled to begin tomorrow and continue until September 11. The ceremonies will commence after 7 a.m. with Vigneshwara Puja in front of the Siddhi Vinayagar shrine near the Amman sanctum, followed by Gaja Puja, Go Puja and Dhana Puja. A ceremony to bring sacred water from the Vaigai River is also scheduled for September 9.

Extensive preparations are under way for the Kumbabishekam, one of the most significant religious ceremonies at the historic temple. The Yagasala rituals are scheduled to begin with the first phase of worship on the evening of September 11. A massive temporary Yagasala pavilion containing 182 sacred fire pits is being prepared on North Aadi Street for the ceremonies.
From September 11 to September 16, repair work, consecration-related preparations and other rituals are scheduled to be carried out at the main sanctums. Consequently, devotees will not be able to have direct darshan of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar during this six-day period.
During these days, devotees will instead be permitted to worship the deity installed at the Yagasala. Temple visitors have therefore been advised to take note of the revised darshan arrangements before planning their visit during the festival period.
The Kumbabishekam for the subsidiary deities is scheduled to take place on the morning of September 16. The main Maha Kumbabishekam will follow on September 17, with ceremonies beginning at 4 a.m.
According to the announced schedule, the principal consecration ceremony is expected to take place between 7.40 a.m. and 8.10 a.m. on September 17. Devotees will be able to have darshan of the main deities on the day of the Maha Kumbabishekam.
The Mandala Pujas following the consecration ceremony are scheduled to be conducted from September 18 to October 2, extending the spiritual observances for more than two weeks.
