Madurai Thirumangalam – Vadugapatti Four-Lane Highway to Be Inaugurated on December 25 by PM Modi

The much-awaited Thirumangalam to Vadugapatti four-lane highway, part of the Madurai–Kollam National Highway (NH-744), is nearing completion and is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 25, according to sources from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

This project aims to strengthen connectivity between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and the PM had laid the foundation stone for the Madurai–Kollam four-lane project in 2023.

Key Highlights of the Project:

  • In the first phase, construction is underway on a 71.6 km stretch between Thirumangalam and Rajapalayam, divided into two sections.
  • The current focus is the 36 km stretch between Thirumangalam and Vadugapatti, developed at an estimated cost of ₹541 crore.
  • The existing road is being widened into a four-lane highway with straighter, safer alignments.
  • Work began in February 2023 and is now 92% complete. Final works are being expedited for the December opening.

Underpasses and Public Opposition Delayed Progress

  • The project includes the construction of 16 underpasses to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
  • However, protests from local residents in Alampatti and Suppulapuram delayed the timeline, especially the construction of 4 remaining underpasses.
  • Two of these underpasses are now under construction to facilitate public access in those regions.

Boost to Trade, Tourism, and Regional Connectivity

  • In Tamil Nadu alone, the highway spans 129.92 km.
  • Once completed, the highway is expected to improve logistics, reduce travel time, and enhance tourism and trade between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
  • The improved road infrastructure will better connect major economic zones and promote regional development.

Inauguration Scheduled for December 25

The Thirumangalam–Vadugapatti stretch is expected to be fully operational by December 25, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi slated to officially inaugurate the route for public use.
