Madurai’s Historic Gandhi Museum Gets Digital Upgrade

Madurai’s Gandhi Memorial Museum, functioning from the historic Thamukkam Palace near Tamil Sangam Road, is set to reopen to the public in the first week of May after an extensive renovation project worth nearly Rs 10 crore. The heritage landmark, which combines the legacy of Queen Mangammal’s palace with the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, has been upgraded with modern visitor amenities while retaining its original architectural identity. The restoration project, announced by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during his 2022 Independence Day address, is expected to make the museum a major attraction for tourists, students and history enthusiasts during the summer vacation season.

Rs 6 crore allocated for restoration of the palace and its two sections, Rs 4 crore earmarked for underground drainage and additional toilet facilities, modernization of roads across the 13.5-acre campus, improved seating at the open-air theatre, digital screens and guided visitor support planned

Restoration led by the Heritage Wing of the Public Works Department, original architectural form preserved through traditional construction methods, special raw materials sourced from across the country, digital interpretation added to make history more accessible, focus placed on heritage conservation alongside public usability

Two modern audio-visual halls, four exhibition galleries, a 15-minute documentary titled “Gandhi in Madurai,” a separate biographical film on Mahatma Gandhi, thematic sections on the Indian freedom struggle, Gandhi’s photographic life history, rare artefacts and models, and a philately section featuring Gandhi-related stamps

Rare artefacts currently stored temporarily in the campus Peace Park, most structural works completed, only interior finishing and painting remain, a separate children’s section planned in the future, museum expected to emerge as a major cultural and educational destination in Madurai

With heritage preservation and contemporary presentation brought together under one roof, the renovated Gandhi Memorial Museum is expected to reintroduce Madurai’s historical pride to a wider audience, museum officials said.
