The ceremonial “Muhurtha Kaal Naduthal,” considered the traditional inaugural ritual of the world-renowned Chithirai Festival at the Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, was held with deep devotion on Monday morning. The ritual, conducted between approximately 9.15 a.m. and 10.15 a.m., marks the official commencement of preparations for the grand annual festival. Temple priests performed special prayers following Agama traditions and ceremonially planted the sacred wooden post, symbolically signaling the start of the Chithirai celebrations.

During the ceremony, Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar were adorned in special decorations and blessed the devotees who had gathered in large numbers. Devotees from Madurai and nearby regions assembled within the temple complex to witness the sacred event and offered prayers with devotion.
Temple authorities had arranged security measures and crowd management systems to ensure that devotees could witness the ceremony in an orderly manner. The atmosphere within the temple premises was filled with spiritual enthusiasm as devotees participated in the ritual.
The Madurai Chithirai Festival is considered one of the largest and most significant religious celebrations in Tamil Nadu. Key events of the festival include the coronation ceremony of Goddess Meenakshi, the divine wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar, and the grand temple chariot procession.
Another highlight of the festival is the ceremonial event in which Lord Kallazhagar from Alagar Kovil enters the Vaigai River, an occasion that attracts thousands of devotees from across Tamil Nadu every year.
