Not for Hunger, but for Learning – Midday Breakfast Scheme Expanded in Madurai!

As part of a major initiative to support students’ health and education, the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme is being further expanded across the Madurai district.

The scheme, which was first launched on September 15, 2022, began in 1,545 government primary schools, benefiting 1.14 lakh students from Classes 1 to 5. Since its launch, it has received an overwhelmingly positive response from students, parents, and the public.

🔹 Key Milestones:

  • On August 25, 2023, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expanded the scheme in Thirukkuvalai, the birthplace of former Chief Minister Kalaignar Karunanidhi, benefiting 30,992 students.
  • Now, in the 4th phase, the scheme continues to grow in Madurai with a focus on government-aided schools.

🔹 District Collector’s Inspection:

Madurai District Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar conducted a detailed inspection of the kitchens where the breakfast is being prepared. He visited:

  • Madurai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School, Kamarajar Salai
  • Corporation Primary School, Singarayar Colony

During the inspection, he stressed the importance of:

  • Food hygiene and safety
  • Non-disruptive preparation during school hours
  • Use of proper hot boxes and storage equipment

📊 Expansion Details (4th Phase):

Students newly benefiting from the scheme in Madurai include:

  • 16,544 students from 99 government-aided schools
  • 3,400 students from 20 municipal schools
  • 1,652 students from 12 town panchayat schools

➡️ Total new beneficiaries: 21,596 students


📍 Current Overall Impact in Madurai District:

  • 1,125 schools covered
  • 60,574 students currently receiving free nutritious breakfast daily

The scheme was introduced with the belief that no child should attend class hungry. It aims to provide students with the energy and nourishment they need to focus on their studies and perform better in school.

This initiative marks a significant step toward ensuring educational equity and child welfare across Tamil Nadu, particularly in underserved communities.
