Following the lunar eclipse that occurred earlier this year in March, another total lunar eclipse is set to take place on Sunday, September 7, 2025. This will be the final lunar eclipse of the year.
The eclipse will begin at 9:57 PM and end at 1:26 AM (midnight). As per tradition, all Hindu temples will remain closed during the eclipse. Although the eclipse occurs at night, temple administrations have announced that temples will be closed earlier in the day, and regular pujas will be suspended.
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam has already announced that the Tirupati temple will remain closed for 12 hours on September 7 due to the lunar eclipse, and several key services will be canceled.
Similarly, the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple and its associated sub-temples will also be closed on September 7. On that day, Madhyama Kaala Tirtham, Abhishekam, and Swamy Procession will take place at 11:41 AM.
From 12:30 PM onward, devotees will not be allowed for darshan or to perform any pujas. Regular darshan will resume on the morning of September 8.

September 7 also coincides with Aavani Pournami, a day when large crowds of devotees are expected to visit the temple. This advance notice has been issued to help devotees reschedule their plans and avoid inconvenience.
Currently, the Aavani Moolam Festival is underway at the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, where Lord Shiva’s 64 Thiruvilaiyadal (divine plays) are being enacted daily.

- September 3 – Puttu Thiruvizha: Meenakshi Amman and Sundareswarar will leave the temple and proceed to the old Chokkanathar Temple. The temple will be closed on this day as well.
- September 6 – Teerthavari at the Potramarai Kulam marks the conclusion of the Aavani Moolam festival.
- September 7 – Lunar Eclipse and Aavani Pournami: Temple will be closed to devotees from 12:30 PM onwards.
- September 8 – Temple reopens for regular darshan as usual.
