Signal-Free Junction with U-Turn Facility Launched in Madurai

In a major step to ease traffic congestion, the Madurai City Traffic Police have implemented a new traffic arrangement at Ponmeni Junction, effective from December 16, 2025.

Under the revised system, the existing traffic signal at Ponmeni Junction has been removed to regulate vehicle movement at the four-road intersection more efficiently. In place of the signal, a U-turn–based traffic system has been introduced to ensure smoother flow and reduce waiting time for motorists.

This decision follows the successful implementation of a similar model at the Junction on the Dindigul Bypass Road. Based on that experience, traffic authorities have now replicated the model at Ponmeni.

As part of the new arrangement, two dedicated U-turn openings have been created at approximately 160-metre intervals on either side of the road. This prevents vehicles from making simultaneous right turns at the junction and helps segregate traffic movement, thereby reducing congestion.

According to the revised rules:

  • Vehicles traveling between Kalavasal and Palanganatham can move freely on the bypass road without stopping.
  • Right turns towards Ponmeni, Palanganatham, SS Colony, or Kalavasal must be made only through designated U-turn points located 60 to 100 metres before the junction.
  • Free left turns are permitted at certain stretches as earlier.

Traffic police officials stated that the new system is expected to reduce congestion, improve travel time, and minimize accidents at the busy junction. Motorists have been advised to remain alert while taking U-turns and strictly follow the instructions of traffic personnel.

While drivers may experience minor confusion initially, authorities believe the system will soon become familiar and significantly improve traffic movement in the area.
