Vandiyur Mariamman Theppakulam

Vandiyoor Mariamman Teppakulam is an important and bustling site located in Madurai. It is situated near the Vandiyoor Mariamman Temple and measures approximately 304.8 meters in length and breadth. On all four sides, there are steps about 12 meters long and a stone wall around 15 feet high. At the center of the tank, there is a Vinayakar (Ganesha) temple with a pavilion. The tank has been renovated and maintained through canal pipes that connect to the water of the Vaigai River.

This tank was originally constructed by Thirumalai Nayakkar in 1645 by digging sand and restructuring the marshy land in the area, creating this square-shaped tank. In its center, a spring pavilion was built.

Vandiyoor Mariamman Teppakulam has become one of the largest temple tanks in Tamil Nadu. It also houses statues of Pillaiyar (Ganesha), notably the Mukkuruni Pillaiyar, which are also found in the Meenakshi Amman Temple.

The Teppam festival of Meenakshi Amman and Sundareswarar held here on the day of Thaipoosam is very famous. Devotees from various places visit Madurai to witness this festival.

It holds significant historical importance and is the only large temple tank in Madurai.
