The Madurai City Municipal Corporation has initiated steps to construct a Multi Sports Ground at a cost of ₹50 lakh in the Sellur area.
A 75-cent land belonging to the corporation, which was under encroachment near the Kabaddi Statue Roundabout on Sellur Bridge Station Road, has been reclaimed. On this site, the corporation, in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Olympic Association, is setting up a modern multi-sports facility for the benefit of sportspersons and local youth.
Following the initiative of Municipal Commissioner Chithra and based on requests from corporation councillors, the project is being developed with private participation at an estimated cost of ₹50 lakh. In the first phase, a compound wall has been constructed at a cost of ₹5 lakh.
The facility will include infrastructure for volleyball, badminton, cricket net practice, kho-kho, silambam, kabaddi, along with a special gym and walking tracks. This initiative has been welcomed by the youth of Sellur and nearby areas.
