Tamil Nadu Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE), P.K. Sekarbabu, has announced that the Kumbabhishekam (consecration ceremony) for the historic Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple will be conducted by February 2026. This announcement has been welcomed by devotees and the general public.

🔧 Ongoing Renovation Works:

  • A total of 186 renovation projects are underway, estimated at ₹23.70 crore.
    • ₹8.90 crore from the temple’s own funds (117 works)
    • ₹14.80 crore from donor contributions (69 works)
  • All works are expected to be completed by December 2025.

🔥 Veeravasantharayar Mandapam Reconstruction:

The Veeravasantharayar Mandapam, which was severely damaged in a fire accident in February 2018, is being fully restored.

  • The restoration requires 79 carved black granite pillars, each 15 feet long.
  • So far, 40 pillars have been received, and 10 have been sculpted.
  • The remaining work is progressing, with 11 more pillars expected to arrive by October 15, 2025.
  • The mandapam restoration is targeted for completion by February 2026.

📅 Kumbabhishekam: Two Possibilities

Minister Sekarbabu stated:

“We are consulting Agama experts on whether the Kumbabhishekam can be conducted without waiting for the full restoration of the Veeravasantharayar Mandapam. If we receive their approval and the Chief Minister’s nod, the ceremony could happen as early as December 2025.

If it’s deemed essential to wait for the full completion of the mandapam, the Kumbabhishekam will be held by February 2026.”

However, the Hindu Temple Protection Movement emphasized that Kumbabhishekam should only be performed after 100% completion of the temple’s renovation, including the damaged mandapam.

🛕 Kumbabhishekam Across Tamil Nadu:

  • As per Minister Sekarbabu, over 3,707 temples have undergone Kumbabhishekam during the current government’s tenure — a historic high.
  • Major Murugan temples like Thirupparankundram, Tiruchendur, Palani, Marudamalai, and Vayalur have seen grand Kumbabhishekams recently.

🔚 Final Words:

With the main temple’s works nearing completion and the mandapam reconstruction underway, devotees may expect the Kumbabhishekam within the next few months — depending on expert recommendations and government decisions.
