The Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple administration has announced that devotees will not be able to have darshan of the presiding deities, Meenakshi Amman and Sundareswarar, for six days from September 11 to September 16 ahead of the temple’s Kumbabishekam ceremony.
The temporary suspension of darshan has been announced to facilitate intensive renovation and ritual works inside the main sanctums, including the application of medicinal preparations to the deities as part of the Kumbabishekam process.
The temple administration has stated that members of the public will be able to have darshan of Meenakshi Amman and Sundareswarar again on September 17, the day scheduled for the main Kumbabishekam ceremony.

The Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, situated in the heart of Madurai, is regarded as one of Tamil Nadu’s prominent spiritual and historical centres. Large numbers of devotees visit the temple to worship Meenakshi Amman and Sundareswarar.
The temple is preparing for its Kumbabishekam, which is scheduled to take place on September 17. Several restoration, renovation and ritual preparations have been carried out as part of the arrangements for the major religious event.
According to the information provided, painting and restoration work on the temple towers has been completed. A ceremony involving the application of medicinal preparations to more than 415 Parivara deities has also taken place.
Construction work is under way for a large Yagasala containing 182 fire pits in the North Aadi Street area. The Yagasala rituals connected with the Kumbabishekam are scheduled to begin on September 6 and continue until September 17.
The Kumbabishekam of the Parivara deities is scheduled to take place on September 16. The main Kumbabishekam ceremony for the temple is expected to be conducted the following morning, on September 17, between 7.40 a.m. and 8.10 a.m.
The temple has announced that Mandala Poojas will subsequently be held from September 18 to October 2.
As the final stages of the preparations require extensive work inside the sanctums, devotees will not be permitted to have darshan of the main deities from September 11 through September 16. During this period, renovation works will be carried out and medicinal preparations will be applied to the deities.
The restriction specifically concerns darshan of Meenakshi Amman and Sundareswarar at their main sanctums during the six-day period. Devotees planning to visit the temple have therefore been advised to take the temporary change in the darshan arrangements into account.
According to the temple administration, devotees will be permitted to have darshan again on September 17, coinciding with the main Kumbabishekam ceremony.
The temple administration has advised devotees to plan their visits in accordance with the revised darshan arrangements and cooperate with the temporary restrictions during the Kumbabishekam preparations.
