₹50-Crore Project with Island, Boating, Gym, and Children’s Play Area – Opening Next Month
Madurai’s Vandiyur Kanmoi is being transformed into a ‘Mini Marina’-style waterfront park at a cost of ₹50 crore. The project includes a man-made island, boating facilities, walking tracks, a gym, yoga hall, and a dedicated children’s play area. With the final phase of development nearing completion, the park is expected to open to the public next month.
While Madurai attracts large numbers of tourists to iconic landmarks such as the Meenakshi Amman Temple, Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple, Alagar Temple, and the Gandhi Memorial Museum, the city has long lacked open recreational spaces for local residents. Apart from malls and cinema halls, daily leisure options for the public have remained limited.
To address this long-standing gap, the Madurai Municipal Corporation has undertaken the development of the Vandiyur Kanmoi, spread across 450 acres and known for holding water throughout the year, into a full-fledged tourism and recreation hub. Seating arrangements have been created along the banks, allowing visitors to enjoy cool breezes and scenic views, similar to a beachside experience.
During the 1982 World Tamil Conference held in Madurai, former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran had announced plans to deepen Vandiyur Kanmoi and convert it into a major recreational center with boating facilities. That visionary announcement is now becoming a reality. Under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Chitra, nearly 85 percent of the project work has been completed.
According to officials from the Municipal Engineering Department, a 3.2-kilometre-long walking track has been developed around the lake. A small island has been created at the center of the kanmoi, accessible via a floating rubber bridge for pedestrians and by boats, allowing visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the water body.
As part of the restoration efforts, invasive water hyacinth plants have been removed, and water purification work has begun. A gymnasium for youth, a yoga hall for senior citizens, and modern restroom facilities are being set up. Separate tracks have been created for children to enjoy skating and cycling, along with a well-equipped children’s play zone. Street lighting is being installed along the lake bunds and walking paths to ensure safety during evening hours.
Officials stated that the final works are being expedited to ensure the park’s inauguration in February, ahead of the announcement of the state assembly elections.
Entry Points and Parking Facilities
Two main entry gates have been established at the old Sundaram Park entrance and opposite the fruit market. Additionally, two exclusive entry gates have been provided near the KK Nagar Enfield showroom and the Honda showroom for official use. An open-access entrance with a decorative arch has also been constructed along the Pandikovil Ring Road on the eastern side of the kanmoi, which will be open to the public.
Parking facilities for cars and two-wheelers have been arranged along Lake View Road and near the Pandikovil Ring Road.
Once opened, the revamped Vandiyur Kanmoi Park is expected to become a major recreational and leisure destination for the residents of Madurai.
