Water Release from Vaigai Dam for Irrigation in Madurai and Dindigul Districts
Irrigation water is being released from the Vaigai Dam at a rate of 900 cubic feet per second to the agricultural fields in Madurai and Dindigul districts.
Accordingly, water is being primarily supplied to the lower irrigation lands of the Periyar main canal irrigation area. As per the government order issued by the Tamil Nadu government, a total of 6,739 million cubic feet of water will be released for irrigation from June 15th to October 12th (120 days).

They, along with others, inaugurated the release of water from Vaigai Dam. Water flowed through the seven major sluices of the Vaigai Dam. Ministers and officials celebrated the occasion by showering flowers into the water.
Total irrigated agricultural land: 45,041 acres
Water is released through an irrigation canal approximately 70 kilometers long from Vaigai Dam. The Public Works Department warns the general public not to enter or cross the canal for safety reasons.
This irrigation water release event opens the way to support farmers in these districts by providing essential water facilities for their agricultural fields.
