Archaeologists and history enthusiasts have identified three damaged burial urns believed to be around 2,000 years old at the foothills of Salluppan Karadu in the Pappi Nayakkanpatti–Sankaralingapuram area of Peraiyur Taluk, Madurai district. A separate burial urn remains buried beneath the soil in a nearby irrigation tank at Pappi Nayakkanpatti, according to a surface archaeological survey. The discovery is considered significant because it provides valuable evidence of ancient Tamil burial customs dating to the Sangam or early historic period. Bone fragments were observed inside one of the urns, while black-and-red ware pottery sherds were found scattered across the surrounding landscape, indicating that the site may once have functioned as an ancient burial ground. Researchers say the findings could contribute to a better understanding of early Tamil society, funerary practices and cultural traditions.
