Devotees visiting Madurai’s Koodal Azhagar Perumal Temple faced difficulties on October 3, the second Saturday of the Purattasi month, after sewage reportedly overflowed from more than 10 underground sewer manholes around the temple and spread onto roads and pathways. The incident caused a foul smell and an unhygienic environment in the area. Devotees and members of the public have urged municipal authorities to address the sewerage problem immediately.
Koodal Azhagar Perumal Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams and attracts thousands of devotees every Saturday during the Tamil month of Purattasi. Devotees traditionally visit the temple during this period for worship and darshan. The sewage overflow occurred around the temple on October 3, when a large number of devotees were visiting the area.
According to the information provided, sewage emerged from more than 10 underground sewer manholes located along the pathways around the temple and flowed onto the roads. The overflow reportedly resulted in a foul smell throughout the surrounding area and created unhygienic conditions. Members of the public and devotees arriving for darshan had to cross areas affected by the sewage.
The problem was particularly noticeable on the Purattasi Saturday, when the number of visitors to the temple is higher. With devotees continuing to arrive for worship, the sewage flowing along the roads and pathways created difficulties for people moving around the temple premises and its surrounding streets.
The sewage overflow also resulted in concerns over cleanliness and sanitation around the prominent temple. Devotees visiting for worship reportedly had to negotiate the affected areas, while the foul smell added to the inconvenience. The issue has prompted requests for immediate attention from the civic authorities.
