The Gandhi Memorial Museum, one of the must-visit places in Madurai city, is located in the ancient palace once owned by Queen Mangammal, known for its grandeur. This museum serves as a reflection of the highest sacrifices made during the freedom struggle, a window introducing us to the Gandhian movement, and a treasure trove of ancient artifacts.
There is an inseparable connection between Madurai and the followers of Gandhi. A significant chapter in the anti-untouchability movement took place in Madurai, particularly in the Meenakshi Temple, where a separate hall was opened for the Harijan community. The palace that houses this museum was built in 1670 AD by the Nayak kings. The main building of the museum is designed to resemble a hut found in Seva Gram. The library inside holds thousands of books. Among them are old letters written by Gandhian followers and collections of many documentary films.
To the south of the main building is an open-air auditorium, which serves as a venue for various cultural events. When planning your visit, it is ideal to coincide with festivals held here. Every year, the Gandhi Jayanti festival is celebrated over five days, marking an important event at the museum.
A special section of the museum is dedicated to key chapters of Gandhi’s life. The “India Fights for Freedom” section beautifully illustrates the roots of the independence movement with paintings and artwork. This section is housed in the palace’s Durbar Hall. Numerous photographs, paintings, and sculptures depicting Gandhi’s life are displayed here for visitors.
The third section of the museum exhibits a hundred everyday items used by Gandhi during his lifetime. Notable exhibits include the letter Gandhi wrote to Hitler and the blood-stained cloth he wore on the day he was assassinated.
