The Madurai City Police have officially launched a new “Singappen” special force unit aimed at strengthening women’s safety and improving rapid law enforcement response across the city. Announced on May 14, the newly formed unit includes one woman Sub-Inspector and four women Head Constables who will focus on handling women-related complaints, monitoring public spaces, and ensuring quick intervention during emergencies. Police officials stated that the initiative has been introduced as part of broader efforts to improve urban security and increase public confidence in policing. Alongside this development, a separate Anti-Narcotics Squad has also been constituted in Madurai to intensify surveillance and action against the illegal sale and movement of narcotic substances in the city.
