A controversy has emerged at Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Madurai after devotees alleged that the regular temple closing schedule was delayed to facilitate Tamil Nadu Minister Nirmal Kumar’s visit. The minister arrived at the temple around 12:55 PM on Friday and was accorded a ceremonial reception by temple authorities. He later proceeded to the sanctum sanctorum along with more than 50 supporters for a special darshan. Devotees claimed that normal temple procedures were altered for the VIP visit, causing inconvenience and dissatisfaction among worshippers waiting at the temple premises.
Temple Timing Controversy:
Tirupparankundram Subramaniya Swamy Temple, Rajagopuram entrance, sanctum sanctorum, Madappalli Mandapam, Sashti Mandapam, front entrance gate, ceremonial exit pathway.
Delay in the usual temple closure timing, extended waiting time for devotees, priority access for VIP visitors, changes in regular darshan arrangements, additional security restrictions, questions over temple administrative procedures.
Minister Nirmal Kumar, temple administration officials, party workers, security personnel, devotees, and temple staff were directly connected to the incident.
As per the standard procedure at the temple, the Uchikala Pooja begins at 12:30 PM and the large gates beneath the Rajagopuram are usually closed by 12:45 PM. Except during festivals and special occasions, devotees are generally not allowed inside after that time. However, the minister reportedly entered the temple around 1:00 PM and exited only at approximately 1:15 PM, after which the temple doors were closed.
Devotees also alleged that while ordinary worshippers are normally directed to exit through the Madappalli and Sashti Mandapam pathways, the minister was allowed to leave through the main ceremonial entrance after the large gate was specially opened. The development triggered criticism among devotees, many of whom questioned whether separate rules were being followed for political VIPs.
Devotees have urged the temple administration to ensure that uniform rules and procedures are followed for all worshippers without exceptions for VIP visitors.
