Minister N. Anand Conducts Surprise Inspection in Madurai

Tamil Nadu Minister N. Anand conducted a field inspection in Madurai district to review precautionary measures ahead of the northeast monsoon, focusing on preventing rainwater stagnation and expediting desilting work in waterbodies and drainage channels. During the inspection, he instructed officials to speed up the removal of water hyacinth and accumulated waste from canals and waterbodies, while stressing that all necessary preparations must be completed on a war footing to ensure rainwater drains quickly from residential areas.

Focus on Drainage Readiness and Waterlogging Prevention

With the northeast monsoon approaching, preventive maintenance of drainage systems and water channels is essential to reduce the risk of waterlogging, traffic disruption and rainwater entering residential neighbourhoods. The inspection focused on the ongoing preparedness measures in Madurai district and the condition of waterbodies and channels that help carry rainwater away from populated areas.

During the visit, the minister emphasised the need to clear water hyacinth and waste that could obstruct the smooth flow of water. Officials were directed to accelerate desilting and cleaning activities and ensure that the work progresses without unnecessary delays.

Particular attention was given to preventing water from accumulating in residential areas during periods of heavy rainfall. Identifying vulnerable locations in advance and ensuring that drainage routes remain clear are important steps in reducing the impact of intense showers. The minister also stressed the importance of completing preparatory work before the rains intensify, rather than relying solely on emergency measures after waterlogging occurs.

The inspection underlined the need for coordinated action among the departments and officials responsible for drainage maintenance and waterbody management. Timely removal of obstructions, regular monitoring of work and effective maintenance of water channels can help improve rainwater flow during the monsoon season.
