Netaji Name Given to New Goripalayam–Sellur Flyover in Madurai

In a major infrastructure boost aimed at easing persistent traffic congestion in Madurai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced that the newly constructed 1.3-kilometre flyover built at a cost of Rs 213 crore will be inaugurated on the 21st during his official visit to the city. The elevated corridor, stretching from Tamukkam Ground to the Anna Statue at Nelpettai, has been officially named the “Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Flyover,” commemorating the iconic freedom fighter who mobilised people from the southern districts during India’s independence struggle.

Affected Areas and Project Highlights:

Tamukkam Ground, Nelpettai Anna Statue, Goripalayam, Sellur, Vaigai North Bank Road.
Reduced traffic congestion, shorter commute duration, improved fuel efficiency, enhanced road safety.
Total project cost of Rs 213 crore, 1.3 km length, strategic city-centre connectivity, multiple access ramps.
Named after Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, tribute to freedom struggle legacy, inauguration scheduled for the 21st, official government announcement.

The Goripalayam–Sellur flyover had been a long-standing demand from residents seeking relief from heavy vehicular movement along one of the city’s busiest corridors. Earlier, Rs 190 crore had been allocated and construction commenced; however, the project experienced delays due to litigation filed by a private college administration, as stated previously by State Minister E.V. Velu. Multiple inspections were conducted to expedite completion.

Additionally, works on the Vaigai North Bank Road project, sanctioned at Rs 168 crore, are progressing, while a detailed project report is being prepared for the proposed Viraganur flyover. The State Government has also identified 100 accident-prone spots to implement safety measures aimed at reducing road mishaps.

In his official statement, the Chief Minister expressed pride in naming the flyover after Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, stating that the government continues to create landmark infrastructure projects while honouring the legacy of national leaders.
