New Prasadam Policy Begins Across TN Temples

From today (July 1), all temples under the control of the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department will directly prepare and sell prasadam to devotees, replacing the earlier private contract system. The announcement was made before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court during the hearing of a public interest petition. A bench comprising Justices Karthikeyan and Sakthivel recorded the submission and formally closed the case, marking a significant administrative shift in temple operations.

The case was filed by Nagarajan from Kanyakumari, who argued that temple prasadams such as Tirupati Laddu, Palani Panchamirtham, Azhagar Kovil Dosai, and Srivilliputhur Akkaravadisal hold unique religious and cultural significance. He stressed that ensuring the quality and sanctity of such offerings is the responsibility of temple authorities.

Until now, several temples had outsourced prasadam preparation and sales to private contractors through lease agreements. The petitioner highlighted concerns over the quality, hygiene, and authenticity of these offerings, claiming that devotees lacked assurance regarding the standards maintained by private operators.

The issue gained urgency as lease agreements for prasadam stalls, along with shops selling coconuts, fruits, flowers, and garlands, expired on June 30 across temples managed by the HR&CE Department. No renewal notifications were issued, creating uncertainty over the continuity of services.

Key Administrative Developments

HR&CE Department, Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, Tamil Nadu temples, devotees
Direct temple-controlled prasadam preparation, end of private lease operations, stronger quality monitoring
Devotee concerns over quality, legal intervention, administrative response, court review
Lease expiry on June 30, uninterrupted supply of puja materials, statewide rollout, improved accountability

Officials clarified that devotees would continue to have uninterrupted access to essential puja items and temple offerings without disruption. The move is expected to strengthen quality control and restore public confidence in temple-administered services.

“The department will ensure safe, authentic and quality prasadam for all devotees across Tamil Nadu temples,” an HR&CE official confirmed before the court.
