Pazhamudhircholai holds immense religious significance as the only one among Murugan’s six sacred abodes where the deity appears with both consorts, Valli and Deivanai. The temple is deeply associated with the legendary episode involving the Tamil poetess Avvaiyar, where Murugan is believed to have tested her wisdom with the famous “roasted fruit or unroasted fruit” question.
A unique Jamun tree linked to that divine event still stands in the temple premises and remains a focal point of devotion. Devotees believe the tree bears fruit only during the Kandha Sashti festival in the Tamil month of Aippasi, adding to the shrine’s mystique.
The hill shrine also houses sacred sites including Noopura Gangai, Rakkaayi Amman Temple, and the nearby Kallazhagar Temple, enhancing its spiritual importance. Temple authorities have urged devotees to follow security protocols and cooperate with officials during the festival.
