Planning a Holiday Trip? The Fares Raise Big Questions!

With Independence Day (August 15), Krishna Jayanthi (August 16), and the Sunday weekend (August 17) falling in succession, a three-day long weekend is on the horizon. Due to this extended break, travel fares—especially for omni buses and flights—have skyrocketed, leaving passengers shocked.

Adding to the rush, Aadi month temple festivals are being celebrated across Tamil Nadu, prompting many people from major cities like Chennai and Coimbatore to travel back to their hometowns.

However, as usual, tickets for government express buses and trains have been sold out well in advance. As a result, a large number of passengers are now turning to private omni buses and flights—only to be met with dramatically increased fares.

🚍 Omni Bus Fare Hike

Omni bus fares are typically higher during weekends. But due to this long weekend, fares have reached unprecedented levels:

  • Chennai to Coimbatore, Tiruppur – Over ₹2,000
  • Chennai to Madurai, Tirunelveli – Up to ₹4,000

This steep increase has left many passengers frustrated.

✈️ Flight Fare Surge

Flight fares too have surged multiple times beyond normal levels:

  • Chennai to Trichy
    Regular fare: ₹1,827 → Now: ₹14,518
  • Chennai to Coimbatore
    Regular fare: ₹3,818 → Now: ₹15,546
  • Chennai to Madurai
Regular fare: ₹4,000 → Now: Up to ₹13,000

😠 Public Frustration Grows

With government travel options fully booked, and private travel fares soaring, passengers are expressing strong disappointment. They also allege that such steep hikes during festivals and holidays have become a recurring issue, severely affecting middle-class and budget travelers.
