During the 2020 COVID lockdown, a shocking incident in Sathankulam, Thoothukudi district shook Tamil Nadu — a father and son, Jayaraj and Bennix, were arrested and brutally assaulted in police custody, resulting in their deaths. Now, the case has taken a new turn.
The grieving family has been waiting for justice for the past five years. The case, which was initially investigated by the CBCID, was later transferred to the CBI for further investigation. However, the investigation has still not been concluded.
Former Sathankulam Inspector Sridhar, one of the main accused in the case, has now filed a surprise petition in the Madurai District Court. In his plea, he stated, “I am willing to become an approver and testify as a witness for the prosecution. I am ready to truthfully reveal all the wrongdoings committed by the police.”
So far, the CBI has filed a charge sheet in two phases spanning 2,400 pages. Testimonies have been recorded from 105 witnesses. Although the High Court had ordered in 2021 that the investigation be completed within six months, the case is still pending — causing immense distress to the victims’ family.
Sridhar’s move to turn approver is seen as a potential game-changer. It is expected to add momentum to what has been a slow investigation. The Madurai District Court has now asked the CBI to respond to his petition.
