Founded in 1881 by American Christian missionaries, The American College in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is one of the oldest higher education institutions in India. Originally established as Pasumalai College by Rev. George T. Washburn, the college boasts a rich history of over 140 years, marked by academic distinction and a deep commitment to cultural diversity.
The American College offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various disciplines:
The college is affiliated with Madurai Kamaraj University and operates as an autonomous institution, which allows it to design a flexible and dynamic curriculum.
Located in the heart of Madurai, the campus is renowned for its iconic red-brick buildings constructed in the Saracenic architectural style by British architect Henry Irwin. Notable structures such as Main Hall, James Hall, and Washburn Hall reflect the college’s rich heritage.
The Daniel Poor Memorial Library serves as the central library, housing a vast collection of books and journals to support academic needs.
The American College places strong emphasis on co-curricular activities that foster holistic development among students. Annual cultural festivals such as AMFEST, TYCOONS, COMMAS, and PEGASUS provide platforms for students to showcase their talents and engage with peers from other institutions.
In 2008, the college entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Appalachian State University, USA. This collaboration offers students opportunities for exchange programs and cross-cultural experiences.
