Back After 7 Years – Koodalampatti Falls Are Finally Reopening!

The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned ₹2.93 crore to develop tourism infrastructure at Koodalampatti Waterfalls, a scenic natural site located near Madurai. This long-awaited move comes after the waterfalls remained closed for over seven years following severe damage caused by Cyclone Gaja in 2018.

Koodalampatti – A Hidden Gem Near Madurai

Situated about 30 km from Madurai city, Koodalampatti is a picturesque waterfall known for its steady water flow for around eight months each year. In the past, the falls attracted large crowds, especially during weekends. However, the cyclone devastated essential infrastructure such as walking paths, bathing areas, railings, toilets, and changing rooms, leading to its prolonged closure.

Tourism Revival with State Funding

A detailed ₹6 crore restoration plan was initially proposed but later shelved. Subsequently, in the 2024–25 state budget, the Tamil Nadu government allocated ₹10.20 crore for developing various tourist sites in Dindigul, Trichy, and Koodalampatti (Madurai). Out of this, ₹2.93 crore has now been specifically allocated for Koodalampatti.

The tourism and public works departments jointly revised the project to ₹2.95 crore. After approval from the forest department, the final sanction of ₹2.93 crore has been granted.

Breakdown of the Fund Allocation

All development work will be carried out under the supervision of the Forest Department. The allocation includes:

  • ₹51.34 lakh – Restoration of walking paths
  • ₹23.91 lakh – Bridge repairs
  • ₹18.60 lakh – Safety fencing
  • ₹38.32 lakh – Construction of entry gate
  • ₹32.24 lakh – Vehicle parking area
  • ₹52.74 lakh – Children’s park
  • ₹8 lakh – Signage boards
  • ₹6.79 lakh – Maintenance costs

Public Demand for Safety Measures

While the initiative has been welcomed, tourists and locals alike are urging authorities to install CCTV cameras to improve safety. Many accidents have occurred on the slippery rocks in the past, highlighting the need for surveillance and emergency infrastructure.

Water Flow Until January – Fast-Track Work Underway

Officials stated that the northeast monsoon will ensure adequate water flow until January, allowing construction to proceed swiftly. Tenders will be floated soon, and if the work is completed within two months, the access roads and other infrastructure can be reopened in time for the upcoming travel season.

Locals Hope for Economic Uplift

Local residents expressed optimism, saying:
“If Koodalampatti Falls is reopened, more tourists will visit our region. That would improve local livelihoods and boost small businesses.”

In Summary

After being closed for over seven years, Koodalampatti Waterfalls is finally set to reopen with a major facelift. The Tamil Nadu government’s initiative is expected not only to revive a popular tourist spot but also to enhance the local economy and promote sustainable tourism.
