Ahead of the Madurai Chithirai Festival 2026, the District Food Safety Department has issued detailed guidelines for organizations and individuals involved in annadhanam (free food distribution), emphasizing strict hygiene and safety standards. Authorities have mandated that all beverages such as sherbet, cool drinks, buttermilk, and food items distributed during the festival must be prepared hygienically and should not contain artificial coloring agents. Ensuring public health, officials stressed the compulsory use of quality ingredients and verification of expiry dates before preparation and distribution.

Officials further highlighted that cleanliness must be maintained at all food distribution points throughout the festival. The department warned that strict action will be taken against those violating food safety regulations. Distributing food without obtaining prior permission has been explicitly discouraged, and compliance checks will be conducted during the festival period.
