Following the swearing-in ceremony of TVK leader Vijay as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu yesterday, CTR Nirmal Kumar officially assumed office as the state’s Electricity Minister. The oath-taking ceremony was held at Raj Bhavan in Chennai in the presence of Governor Rajendra Arlekar. Hailing from Usilampatti in Madurai district, Nirmal Kumar has emerged from being a digital political strategist to becoming a cabinet minister, drawing significant attention in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. He is widely regarded as one of the political organizers who transformed social media outreach into an effective electoral strategy.

CTR Nirmal Kumar entered active politics through the BJP in 2019 and quickly rose to prominence as the Tamil Nadu BJP IT Wing chief. His expertise in online political communication, meme-based campaigning, and digital outreach made him a recognizable figure in Tamil Nadu politics. However, differences with the BJP state leadership eventually led to his exit from the party.
After a brief political phase with the AIADMK, he joined Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam alongside Aadhav Arjuna during the party’s early expansion stage. Soon after joining TVK, he was appointed Deputy General Secretary of the IT Wing and became one of the core architects of the party’s digital infrastructure. He played a key role in mobilizing youth and women supporters across Tamil Nadu through online campaigns and digital volunteer networks.
Apart from handling social media campaigns, he coordinated public meeting permissions, media outreach, election-ground assessments, and political communication for Vijay. Political observers believe his strategic role in TVK’s 2026 Assembly election victory significantly contributed to his elevation to the cabinet.
Government sources stated that Electricity Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar is expected to play a major role in implementing the government’s flagship promise of providing 200 units of free electricity to households across Tamil Nadu.
