At the Madurai Racecourse MGR Arena, where the international Hockey World Cup matches are scheduled from Nov 28 to Dec 10, a major pit formed at Gate No. 6, one of the newly constructed access points for spectators.
The concrete slab laid over the rainwater drainage channel collapsed, causing a large hole, which restricted the movement of both vehicles and pedestrians entering the venue.
This gate was specifically prepared for vehicle and public entry with a cemented platform. However, due to damage, immediate patchwork using sand and stones was carried out to allow temporary access.
Over 1,500 online-registered spectators and 2,000 unregistered viewers are expected to use this entrance daily.
Authorities have urged spectators to be cautious and use alternative paths where possible.
