Madurai Gets Rs 43 Crore Child Care Block

Construction of the five-storey Integrated Pediatric Treatment Center built at a cost of Rs 43 crore inside the Madurai Government Medical College campus has been completed, and the facility is expected to be opened for public use within the next few weeks. The new building, constructed near the Super Speciality Hospital block, has been developed with 200 beds and equipped with advanced pediatric treatment facilities, oxygen units, air-conditioning systems, and other modern healthcare infrastructure. The existing pediatric ward functioning in the Government Rajaji Hospital has been struggling with severe space constraints for years, prompting the state government to establish a dedicated integrated treatment center for children.

Affected and Beneficiary Locations:
Madurai Government Hospital, Government Medical College campus, Super Speciality Hospital premises, Central Hospital campus, Anna Bus Stand region.

Key Stakeholders and Beneficiaries:
Children requiring specialized treatment, cancer patients, doctors, nurses, healthcare staff, and residents of southern Tamil Nadu districts.

Major Facilities and Infrastructure Features:
200-bed capacity, modern pediatric treatment equipment, oxygen support systems, air-conditioned wards, drinking water connectivity, sewage systems, electrical infrastructure, five-storey building structure.

Funding and Administrative Developments:
Initial allocation of Rs 20 crore, foundation stone laid in June 2023 by then Health Minister Subramanian, additional Rs 23 crore sanctioned later, final-stage public works department installations, conversion of the old pediatric ward into a temporary cancer treatment unit.

Officials stated that once the pediatric department is shifted to the newly completed integrated center, the old hospital building will temporarily accommodate additional cancer patients until the proposed integrated cancer treatment center near Anna Bus Stand becomes operational.
