Madurai Junction to Boost Rail-Bus Connectivity

The major redevelopment work at Madurai Railway Station has reached 50 percent completion, according to railway officials. The station, categorized under the non-suburban Category-2 segment based on passenger revenue, handles 96 trains daily and serves an average of 51,296 passengers. To improve infrastructure and passenger convenience, the Indian Railways initiated the redevelopment project at an estimated cost of Rs 347.47 crore, awarding the contract to a private firm in September 2022.

Project Highlights

Madurai Railway Station, Indian Railways, Central Government, Private Contractor, Periyar Central Bus Stand
Rs 347.47 crore investment, 50% work completed, world-class facilities, green-certified buildings
Improved passenger flow, better connectivity, enhanced safety measures, reduced congestion
96 trains daily, 51,296 passengers, 110-metre overtrack waiting hall, multi-level parking facilities

The eastern terminal building, spread across 22,576 square metres, is being developed as a two-storey structure reflecting Madurai’s cultural heritage in its facade. The ground floor will include international-standard restrooms, luggage storage, help desks, and childcare facilities. Separate movement paths are being designed for arriving and departing passengers.

One of the most notable features is the 110-metre-wide waiting hall above the railway tracks, connecting both eastern and western terminals. This will allow passengers to wait comfortably while also having direct visual access to train arrivals. The area will be linked to platforms through staircases, escalators, and lifts.

The western terminal is also being upgraded into a two-storey facility housing ticketing offices, railway service units, and essential passenger amenities. In addition, multi-level parking structures for two-wheelers and four-wheelers are being developed on both sides of the station.

Dedicated access roads are also being laid out to ensure smooth passenger movement. A subway linking the railway station to the Periyar Central Bus Stand and separate foot overbridges to bus and auto stands are part of the integrated mobility plan.

Railway authorities confirmed that all structures are being built as green buildings in line with Central Government regulations, and the remaining works will be completed within the scheduled timeline.
