Madurai Faces Danger If Action Is Delayed Before Rains

Residents and environmental activists in Madurai have raised serious concerns over alleged encroachments on the Uthangudi water tank and its natural drainage channels along the Madurai–Melur Road, warning that the issue could worsen urban flooding during the monsoon season. A formal petition highlighting the matter was submitted to the Madurai District Collector by J. Kanagaraj, coordinator of the Tamil Nadu Rivers, Lakes, Ponds and Tanks Protection People’s Movement. The petition stresses that unless immediate corrective measures are taken, the area could face severe flood-related disruptions.

According to the petition, the Uthangudi tank and its associated canals are essential for maintaining the natural drainage network of the region. Any blockage in these channels could lead to severe urban flooding, damaging homes, roads, and public infrastructure. The movement has also cited previous flood incidents in the locality as evidence of the growing danger.

The memorandum calls for coordinated action by the Public Works Department, Revenue Department, and local civic bodies to conduct inspections, verify land records, and initiate legal action against unauthorized occupiers. Activists have sought a 15-day deadline for immediate intervention, emphasizing that delayed action may aggravate the flood situation.

“The Uthangudi tank and its natural waterways must be restored without delay to prevent future urban flooding,” said movement coordinator J. Kanagaraj.
