Madurai International Airport, one of the key aviation hubs serving southern Tamil Nadu, is preparing for its first large-scale terminal expansion since the inauguration of its integrated terminal building in 2010. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has planned the project to ease peak-hour passenger congestion, improve operational efficiency, and significantly increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity. The expansion will add 10,000 square metres to the existing 17,560-square-metre terminal, taking the total built-up area to 27,560 square metres while introducing several modern passenger and security facilities.
Although the airport has not yet reached its overall annual capacity, heavy congestion is regularly experienced during the evening peak hour between 4:05 p.m. and 5:05 p.m. During this period, around 700 passengers use a terminal designed to accommodate approximately 600 passengers. The proposed expansion aims to address this bottleneck while supporting future growth in domestic and international air travel.

The upgraded airport will also feature additional CCTV surveillance, X-ray scanners, explosive detection systems, and full-body scanners to strengthen security and improve the detection of prohibited and smuggled items. The additional apron infrastructure will accommodate aircraft such as the Airbus A321, Airbus A320, and Boeing 737 more efficiently.
Although Madurai Airport has officially functioned as a 24-hour airport since October 2024, aviation enthusiasts note that regular overnight commercial flight operations have not yet commenced. At present, the airport handles around 18 domestic flights daily along with one international service to Colombo. There is also continued anticipation that the suspended Madurai–Abu Dhabi IndiGo service, discontinued in February, may resume in the future.
Airport Director P. Muthu Kumar stated that the expansion project has been designed to enhance passenger experience, operational efficiency, and long-term infrastructure readiness for the airport.
