Madurai district has announced a two-day local holiday on September 16 and 17 in view of the Mahakumbabishekam of the Meenakshi Amman Temple scheduled for September 17. The decision has been taken considering the large number of devotees expected to visit Madurai for the major ceremony, which is being held after 17 years, as well as the need to strengthen public safety and manage traffic across the city.

School and college quarterly and term examinations scheduled on the two holiday dates have been postponed, rescheduled examinations will begin from September 18 as announced;

The local holiday will apply to government and private schools, colleges and government offices across Madurai district. The move comes as the city prepares for a significant increase in the number of visitors during the temple Kumbabishekam and associated religious activities.
As a result of the holiday, quarterly and term examinations scheduled in schools and colleges on September 16 and 17 have been postponed. The rescheduled examinations will commence from September 18. Students have therefore been advised to take note of the revised examination schedule and prepare accordingly.
The administration has also made arrangements to compensate for the working days lost because of the holiday. Two Saturdays falling in October will reportedly function as working days. September 24 has also been declared a working day as part of the arrangements to make up for the holiday period.
The Meenakshi Amman Temple Mahakumbabishekam is scheduled to take place on September 17 between 7:40 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. during the auspicious time. The ceremony is expected to attract devotees from Madurai and other parts of Tamil Nadu, with preparations being intensified across the city.
Security arrangements have been strengthened at the temple and surrounding areas to regulate the movement of devotees and maintain public safety. Traffic management measures are also being intensified to address congestion expected on important roads during the festival.
The two-day local holiday is intended to facilitate the large-scale arrangements required for the event while reducing the movement of students, employees and other regular commuters during the peak period. Authorities are simultaneously preparing for the increased movement of devotees and vehicles expected in central Madurai.
The district administration has requested residents and devotees to cooperate with the security and traffic arrangements and follow instructions issued by the authorities during the Meenakshi Amman Temple Mahakumbabishekam.
