A section of an ornamental stone pillar collapsed inside the world-renowned Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai on Tuesday, triggering concern among devotees ahead of the temple’s upcoming Kumbabishekam ceremony scheduled for September 17. The incident occurred in the corridor connecting the Mukkuruni Vinayagar shrine and the main sanctum area, near a room designated for nursing mothers. Temple officials confirmed that no devotees were present at the spot when the decorative portion of the historic stone pillar suddenly broke and fell, preventing injuries or casualties. The mishap comes at a time when extensive renovation, restoration, and painting works are being carried out across the temple complex in preparation for the consecration ceremony.

Authorities are examining whether scaffolding erected around the pillars and sculptures for restoration and painting activities may have contributed to the weakening of the structure. The temple administration has launched a detailed inquiry into the incident and is expected to seek technical opinions from conservation and structural experts. The Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of Tamil Nadu’s most significant spiritual and architectural landmarks, has been undergoing phased restoration activities ever since the fire accident at the historic Veeravasantharayar Mandapam in 2018 caused structural damage to parts of the complex.
